Hello. Just a question. I have been on isotretinoin (roaccutane/accutane) for a month now and i have noticed my face and hands are slightly red/pinker than usual. Im thinking this could be due to skin being more sensitive to sun but want to make sure. Weather where i live hasnt exactly been hot or anything... People keep commenting and asking if i have been on holiday :-P

Doctors often refer to the dryness that occurs with isotretinoin and retinoids like Retin-A as the retinoid reaction. Although normal, the dryness can lead to a feeling of discomfort that can ultimately compromise your compliance. Retinoid reaction includes:

Patients are advised to moisturize frequently with a non-oily moisturizer such as Elevase Moisture Booster, which we use in our office. This is a common "side effect" from the medication or what I tell people is expected.  Moisturizer is important.  This will go away after the medication is stopped.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Your redness can be due to sun sensitivity or, more likely, irritation from the medicine.  This is not an uncommon side effect.  Make sure to use sunscreen and a moisturizer every day, and moisturizer again at night.  Avoid irritating washes, exfoliators, and, as per your doctor, even topical medications.
