Any advice on thin bridge skin issues & rhinoplasty?

Question

I am having a primary septorhinoplasty in a few months to correct a deviation of the bony and cartilaginous pyramid and the nasal septum. My surgeon has told me that I have a very fine skin particularly over the bridge. He also told me that he may need to use rib cartilage. I am worried about the final result having a fine skin. Any advice on this? Thanks

The skin is almost always thinner over the nasal bridge. That is why we work very hard to  make it as smooth as possible. It is also unusual to use a rib graft in a primary rhinoplasty unless the patient has a very broad bridge and very weak and thick tip (ethnic rhinoplasty). If you're not sure, it's always best to get a few different opinions to see what sounds the best to you.

People with thin nasal skin tend to show more irregularities after rhinoplasty surgery then people with thicker skin types. Since you stated that you have thin skin, the skill of your surgeon will be imperative. When cartilage grafting is necessary during primary rhinoplasty surgery, we typically harvest this from the nasal septal cartilage. Thank you for your question! Sincerely, Dr Joseph

Hi there! Great question. For thin skin, I use temporalis fascia or rib perichondrium to help camouflage and "thicken" the skin slightly. This helps to reduce the show-through rate of any potential asymmetries. It can be quiet effective. May be worth asking if your surgeon utilizes such techniques. Hope this helps!
