Will removing rhinoplasty cast early due to allergic tape reaction affect my results?

Question

I had rhinoplasty four days ago. On the second day I developed an allergic reaction to the adhesive on the surgical tape. I had to remove the cast. Will this affect my results? I still have the internal splints inside and they are being removed in two and a half days

It is usually one week period that we advice our patient to have splint after surgery. However, removing a splint before that time will not affect result of rhinoplasty except for possibly swelling. Some surgeons do not use splint at all relying on tape immobilization to control swelling. Just be careful of possible mechanical injury and avoid touching and manipulating the nose. Good luck.

I usually keep the nasal cast on for 7-8 days particularly if the nasal bones are manipulated or reduced. The cast holds the nasal bones in position, and provides compression to minimize swelling.  Early removal may lead to additional swelling for a longer amount of time. As long as you maintain close follow up with your surgeon who can monitor your swelling and progress, you should be just fine.

Dear TiffanyAubin, It is best to follow with your surgeon and discuss your concerns. The question may be the type of tape used. Was it hypoallergenic? Was it waterproof or paper tape? Was it to tight?  Can a replacement be used? These are questions you can ask your surgeon. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.
