Post facelift and upper blepharoplasty pain relief while on Suboxone?

Question

I am a 56-year-old woman currently on 8 mg Suboxone a day. I have had different advice on when to start reducing my Suboxone before surgery. My GP has prescribed morphine 5 mg p.o. q4h while staying on the 8 mg of Suboxone. From my research, I don't believe the prescribed dose of morphine will do anything for pain. I am hopeful that Tylenol will be adequate but if it isn't I would like to know that adequate pain relief is available. Help!!

Often GPs do pain management. However sometimes you need expert input. Facelift and blepharoplasty is not actually a particularly painful surgery. Generally after surgery, patients only need a couple of days of tylenol with codeine. This is not like knee replacement surgery. However, you have a pain management problem. Your cosmetic surgery is elective. Don't do it until you have the resources you need to have it comfortably.

That is a question to be directed toward your surgeon. The surgeon needs to make the decision based on consultation with the anesthesiologist or your pain management doctor.

Thank you for your questions. When a patient is on Suboxone it is best for the prescribing doctor and surgeon to come up with a pain management plan together. There are other pain meds that work well on postop pain that are not narcotics. I recommend scheduling a consultation with a board certified Plastic Surgeon and be thorough with your medical history. They will be able to develop a plan that is best for you. Good luck!
