Breathing thru my nose is difficult and my dentist identified my gums are dry and inflamed from mouth breathing. My doctor referred me to an ENT specialist. My nose has a large dorsal hump and I've always wanted rhinoplasty to fix this and my breathing but I want to it to look perfect. Should I ask the ENT about this? Is a portion of the surgery covered thru healthcare benefits and could I ask to pay for the cosmetic portion? Will the ENT be offended and is it better to go to a plastic surgeon?

Answer: Rhinoplasty Thank you for your question. You are an excellent candidate for rhinoplasty. I think it is one of the most beautifying surgeries that we do as plastic surgeons. It has been my experience that traditionally most ENT surgeons who perform functional rhinoplasty rarely have the skill set to create an aesthetically attractive nose. It is important to only see plastic surgeons with extensive experience in rhinoplasty, ie perform at least 6 per month and have performed hundreds of cases. Also, critically evaluate their on-line galleries to see if their art form resonates with yours. Rhinoplasty is definitely a grey haired plastic surgeon's sport. Best wishes to you

Answer: Septoplasty with rhinoplasty You will want a surgeon experienced with both functional and cosmetic nasal surgery. The ENT you were referred to might have the necessary experience but it is best to ask. If the ENT does not perform rhinoplasty then I am sure a referral to a colleague can be arranged.
