Does ENT perform rhinoplasty or should I ask for a referral?

Breathing thru my nose is difficult and my dentist identified my gums are dry and inflamed from mouth breathing. My doctor referred me to an ENT specialist. My nose has a large dorsal hump and I've always wanted rhinoplasty to fix this and my breathing but I want to it to look perfect. Should I ask the ENT about this? Is a portion of the surgery covered thru healthcare benefits and could I ask to pay for the cosmetic portion? Will the ENT be offended and is it better to go to a plastic surgeon?

Most general Ear Nose Throat doctors don't perform rhinoplasty. It is very common to have both cosmetic rhinoplasty done at the same time as nasal breathing improvement surgery like you're looking to do.
You could find a facial plastic surgeon who is board certified in both ENT and facial plastic surgery who would be able to treat both issues.

Both ENT and plastic surgeons perform rhinoplasty.  I tend to send the functional rhinoplasties to my ENT colleagues as they can get back into the sinuses if needed.  If I were you I would likely seen the ENT as your problem sounds functional.

Thank you for your question. You are an excellent candidate for rhinoplasty. I think it is one of the most beautifying surgeries that we do as plastic surgeons.  It has been my experience that traditionally most ENT surgeons who perform functional rhinoplasty rarely have the skill set to create an aesthetically attractive nose.  It is important to only see plastic surgeons with extensive experience in rhinoplasty, ie perform at least 6 per month and have performed hundreds of cases. Also, critically evaluate their on-line galleries to see if their art form resonates with yours. Rhinoplasty is definitely a grey haired plastic surgeon's sport. Best wishes to you

You will want a surgeon experienced with both functional and cosmetic nasal surgery. The ENT you were referred to might have the necessary experience but it is best to ask. If the ENT does not perform rhinoplasty then I am sure a referral to a colleague can be arranged.

Rhinoplasty is the most difficult operation to perform correctly in the entire field of cosmetic surgery,   so it is important to choose your surgeon based on experience.  Seek out a double board-certified ENT/facial plastic surgeon who can accomplish functional breathing surgery such as a septoplasty, and cosmetic rhinoplasty. Both procedures can be performed together under general anesthesia.  Expect to pay for the cosmetic rhinoplasty component yourself.
