About a year ago I received a steroid shot, ever since then I’ve had a “dent” in the area where it was preformed. I’ve heard they’re supposed to go away on their own, but I’ve had it for too long so I don’t think it will. Would fat grafting fix this or Sculptra? What’s safest?
Answer: Dent fix with fat transfer recommended Your small dent can absolutely be fixed. If you have some additional fat on your abdomen or inner thighs, it can be harvested, either under general or local sedation, and placed into the dent. Sculptra is an option as well but not as organic or natural feeling for the first month or so until everything settles. Answer: This can be improved! Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to have these types of contour defects after injection of medications, trauma, infection, or other reasons. Release of scar tissue and fat grafting, and even Sculptra would definitely help. Even though you may not achieve a 100% correction in the contour deficit, a significant improvement can be achieved with one or more procedures. In my experience, fat transfer is extremely safe, and I have achieved excellent results that are generally longer lasting than Sculptra. That said, either one is a good option.

Answer: Dent Dear ryn12, it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. Based on your photo, it looks like fat transfer would improve your dent. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations. Answer: Steroid Divot A small area of fat loss in the buttocks like this could be treated through fat grafting or by utilizing an off-the-shelf product such as Renuva. Fat grafting requires liposuction from somewhere else to collect fat to inject into the area of volume loss, whereas Renuva can be injected much like the fillers we use in the face.

Answer: Steroid induced fat atrophy Steroid induced fat atrophy is a fairly uncommon, but potentially devastating complication of steroid injections. Fat grafting is probably the best long-term option, but it may be difficult to get enough fat to survive in a small area so the procedure may need to be done a couple of times.Fillers are definitely an option, but will be expensive in the long term. I suggest consulting with plastic surgeons who have a proven track record with fat grafting procedures. When reviewing before, and after pictures for fat transfer results, always confirm the timeframe of when after pictures were taken. Early fat transfer very impressive but do not necessarily represent final results. After pictures are a more accurate representation 3 to 6 months after surgery. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
