Can I still have surgery if my WBC came back 10.3?

Question

The lab who conducted my blood work said that is considered high, however, the research I have done says it is normal. I am 30 years old with no sign of Illness or infection.

Hello, thank you for inquiring. Usually if there is an underlying infection happening including elevated WBCs or a UTI we cancel surgery and don't risk having an infection post operatively. I would speak to your family doctor about what is happening and you may need a further work up to see what the cause may be.

I don’t think it would be an issue but your surgeon has the final say. The other option is to repeat the blood count.

An elevated WBC count usually indicates an infection of some kind.  Please discuss this with your surgeon and anesthesiologist.

I appreciate your concerns Taylor and that number does appear to be high end normal. With no signs or symptoms of infection, surgery should be able to be performed without concerns. Another option would be to repeat the bloodwork, however your board-certified plastic surgeon needs to make the final decision with this regard. Good luck.

every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. Your lab results should be under control prior to surgery. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

If you do not have any signs of illness or infection it is probably fine.  Your surgeon will discuss the lab results with you and is the one to make the final determination of if it is safe to proceed with surgery.
