Is it normal for leaking fluid after Breast Augmentation?

Question

'm 16 post op from breast augmentation and a lift with saline implants. I took the sterile strips off around my areola insicion on one side and I have orange fluid leaking from the bottom of the incision. I called my plastic surgeon and he said it was normal. Today it is really leaking like a water faucet. Freaking out here.

Most simple breast augmentation has minimal leakage and this stops around 2-3 days. I Have seen prolonged incisional ooze with augmentation -lift combination . But large amount of drainage is not normal. I would ask your PS to take a look sooner than later to make sure things are normal and you have no other issues.

Small amount of drainage of yellowish fluid from the incision on the steri strip or gauze is ok. What is not normal is continues leaking like a faucet even a dripping faucet.  This could be seroma formation collected in the pocket around your implant that is leaking through that part of the incision. You need to see your plastic surgeon ASAP for his or her advice

What you are describing it is not normal after surgery, you should speak with your surgeon about this and check to see what is causing this after surgery. Good luck!

Thank for your for your question.Although it is not possible to provide you with a definite answer without examining you, this is certainly not "normal".  There may be a small amount of fluid at the incision when a breastlift is performed.  Usually this last just a few days.  It is definitely a small amount.  Not like a faucet.  You should see your plastic surgeon sooner than later in order for both of you to understand the issue and take steps to possible prevent a bigger problem.Good Luck.

If you are leaking "like a faucet" you need to see your surgeon ASAP.  It could be something minor but I always say "better paranoid than sorry".  Pay your surgeon a little visit and have him check it out.

kamloopsgal72, A small amount of serous (clearish to pink) fluid leakage (drops) may be normal, but large volume leakage would mean either a fluid collection within the breast tissue, or even galactorrhea (breast milk like drainage) at best, or potentially a communication with the implant pocket(s) at worst. This is something that your surgeon should evaluate directly by observation and exam, and cannot be adequately handled via internet or phone.  Call the surgeon again and report the volume of drainage and its appearance and insist on being seen.  I hope that this helps.
