Crooked lips, nerve damage from fat injections to cheeks?

Question

I had jaw surgery 3 months ago. Dr injected fat in my cheeks as well (cannula). Since then my lips are crooked when speaking. (left side) I can also see slight asymmetry at rest no asymmetry when smiling. I also have numb palate and no taste in my tongue + burning on the same side. EMG showed facial nerve damage (eye and mouth branch). please help. if this is from fat injection should it already resolve after 3 months? Im terrified it will be permanent.

It is unlikely that you have nerve damage as a result of your fat injections. I recommend following up with your Doctor for a formal evaluation. You may have swelling, which can last 3-6 months. I recommend prp and sculptra after fat transfer to improve final results. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question. It would be very unlikely for there to be nerve damage from fat injection if it was done with a blunt cannula as it usually is. Furthermore, if there was some irritation to a nerve, it should resolve in weeks to months. If you are still having problems, you need to discuss this with your surgeon as well as how he or she plans to follow it or address it in the future.Best of luck!

I have done thousands of fat transfer procedures and never had a nerve injury. However, orthographic surgery has well-documented risks of nerve injury.

nerve injury from fat grafting would be quite unlikely and if so would likely be temporary. Any nerve injury you have is more likely to be due to the jaw surgery.
