Lower tummy bigger after lipo

Question

Hi, I had lipo 9 months ago on my stomach. The upper part looks good but the bottom is actually bigger than before the surgery. It feels really weird, almost like a water balloon. When I touch it, it literally feels like liquid inside. My surgeon seemed to think it's normal, but I know it's different. Also, I did not lose a pant size after the lipo. When I'm on my period, I'm actually going up a size! Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you for your question. It sounds like there may be a fluid collection in the lower abdomen ( seroma) following liposuction. This can occur and feel like a "water balloon" as you described. This can be easily evaluated by an ultrasound, and if present, drained at the same time. You should discuss this with your surgeon, since  seromas that persist for months after surgery, typically need to be drained. Good luck.

Usually, your intuition is right on.  If you feel there is actual fluid within the skin, this very well may be the case.  Have your surgeon examine you to rule out a seroma (excess fluid that sometimes accumulates after surgery).
