Can the airway be narrowed after rhinoplasty? If a patient goes from having a very wide nose to a rather narrow nose, the width of the airway is correspondingly reduced and in some cases may be noticeably worse than before surgery. If the middle portion of the nose is narrow and moves inward on inspiration, the traditional treatment for that, if it bothers the patient enough is to insert spreader grafts to widen the nose and widen the airway. This does make the nose look visibly wider but if the narrow airway is bothersome enough it may be beneficial. If there is a deviated septum that was not previously addressed in some cases doing a septoplasty may resolve the problem. Some surgeons may do a combination of both a septoplasty and spreader grafts. In any event you need to be evaluated with a competent plastic surgeon or ENT surgeon to determine the cause of the difficulty breathing through the nose.
