Way to grow out hair? Would PRP treatments work - Am I too young? (photos)

Thank you for your question. You submitted two photos, and ask at the age of 20 about your frontal hair and temporal hairlines. You describe a lot of fine hairs that don’t get thicker. You state you’re not experiencing hair loss, but you’d like to see if you can get them thicker, and if PRP is appropriate and permanent.
I can share with you guidance I would offer to a person like yourself if they were to come to our office. A little of background: I’m a Board-certified cosmetic surgeon and Fellowship-trained oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgeon. I have been in practice in Manhattan and Long Island for over 20 years. You’re describing a natural genetic pattern of your anatomy. Our knowledge to this is limited because we generally don’t treat an individual who has no evidence of hair loss, but is looking to make existing hairs thicker.
PRP is not permanent, so it does require regular treatment to stimulate hair growth, so I would say for you it’s not worth doing. For your own education and to understand the differentiation, what we do in our practice for both men and women who have temporal hair loss is our treatment Hair Regeneration. We combine a material called extracellular matrix with PRP. This evolved out of our treatment for hair transplant to help the grafts to grow, as well as the donor area to heal, but we also found thinning hair became thicker. Starting 7 years ago, we developed a system for both men and women suffering from progressive miniaturization and progressive hair loss. We’re able to reactivate hair that is not growing, strengthen and stimulate the growth of existing hair, and induce the shed of thinning hair so thicker hairs can grow in. We do treat young people, with our youngest female pattern hair loss patient being 16-years-old, and our youngest male pattern hair loss patient at 17. I think that in your situation, if you were to even consider doing something, you would be going through areas we don’t have good data for. I would probably dissuade you from treatment because it’s not as cosmetically negatively impactful as you currently appear. In terms of the expense and sustainability of whatever treatment is necessary, if you could avoid doing this, then you should hold off on it. We treat patients from all over the world for both male and female pattern hair loss, so we’re dealing with a wide range of people who are losing hair. This type of progression, and the technology we have does have an effect on hair that’s thinning. However, when patients come and say, “I have thin hair and I want to make my hair thicker,” but they’re not thinning, I tell them this is not the right treatment as it can’t change genetics. It’s an academic question that you may get some thickening of hairs that in the intermediate caliper but I don’t think that’s worthwhile pursuing at this young age. As long as there’s no evidence of hair loss in the future, you should hold off any intervention. Based on your photos and description PRP will not give you the results you are looking for.The only way to significantly increase the hair density in that area would be with a transplant.

A combination of hair growth treatments are usually needed to get the most improvement. I suggest seeing a hair growth expert now to go over your blood test results and provide you information about your best treatment options.
