Is this a hematoma on my lip or too much Juvederm product? (photos)

Question

Got 1/2 mil of Juvederm put in my lips for first time six weeks ago - no issues. Went for the remaining 1/2 mil Thursday, and aside from minor swelling and a small bruise on top lip, not really any issues. However, the day after, I noticed a large lump on my lower left lip. It’s almost a perfect circle and looks worse in certain lights. Is this a hematoma or too much product? I plan to call injector this week (she has 17 yrs of experience) but thought I’d get some opinions, if possible.

There can be some swelling and/or lumps after lip injections which can last 1 to 2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 minutes at a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out any lumps. Ultimately, if you're unhappy with your final results, you can have the filler dissolved with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. You can always follow up with your injector or get a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist if you have any additional concerns. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for sharing your excellent question and photographs.  It appears that this area may be a bit of extra filler deposit, but may also be the needle insertion site that is swollen.  I would recommend allowing your results a full 2-3 weeks time to mature and then revisit the area to see if it has improved or softened.  If it has not, then a small amount of dissolving agent can be applied.  Best wishes.

This could be from swelling or filler placed superficially.  Swelling and bruising can take up to two weeks to resolve after filler placement. If after that time you still have concerns, return to your injector for an evaluation.

It appears that there may be superficial filler on the lip. I would follow up with your injector as a small tweakment or adjustment should be relatively easy to improve this.
