Custom silicone implants 1000cc to 1500cc

Question

Outside of the U.S. the doctors perform 900-1500cc silicone why is that those doctors can get there hands on larger silicone implants and the U.S doctors can't? Beside the fact they are not FDA approved a few patients fly out of the country to get larger silicone.

Right now, Mentor has XL silicone implants in trial that go up to 1500cc.  However, they are only designated for breast reconstruction and are still in the trial phase.  Currently, your only way to get above the 800cc range is to use an 800cc moderate plus saline implant and overfill it to the volume you are likely by for.  The manufacturer range on the 800cc is up to 1000cc.  However, everyone knows that it can be filled to 1500cc and still feel somewhat soft and completely maintain its shell strength.  Unlike a custom silicone implant ( which is not allowed in the US), the saline implant overfilled gives you flexibility during surgery to add more if the tissues can handle it.  I have patients with 2700cc and love them.  As a test I have taken an 800cc Shell and filled it to 3300cc.  It looked like a basketball, but we dropped it on the ground ten times and nothing happened to it.  Going out of the country, especially for a procedure like this that can have a higher complication rate, is not as advised.  The best thing to do is have a consultation and see what will work best for you.  I hope this helps.

There are actually laws prohibiting the importation/use of unapproved medical devices. The medico-legal liability risk of ignoring this (even if there weren't actual laws) are huge. No reasonable surgeon in the U.S. will use imported unapproved devices, and you should not use a surgeon who would.The only option here for oversized implants is saline since they can be overfilled to over 2000cc.
