How soon after mommy makeover can I lay flat?

Question

I had a Tummy tuck with hernia and muscle repair with a Breast Augmentation (over the muscle) 3 weeks ago. I am wondering how long until I can sleep more flat as sleeping propped up is really hurting my back. I am swelling also and have been told to rest more. So my back is struggling due to being in the same position.

Each plastic surgeon has their own guidelines for this, and these guidelines may change with each patient. Patients usually choose to sleep and a somewhat flexed position whether on their side or on their back, for the first week. After that, they seem much more inclined to sleep flat which  has no bearing on their healing or final results.

Hello, the majority of my patients are laying flat by about a week after their makeover.  However, you should check with your plastic surgeon because everyone heals at a slightly different rate, and it is possible they have different advice.

This question is best answered by your surgeon who is most familiar with the details of your surgery and how you've been progressing through recovery.  In general at three weeks post op you should be able to begin varying your sleeping positions.  Sleeping on your side and supported by pillows may be more comfortable than laying flat which can put tension on your abdominal muscles, but you should be able to shift in bed as is comfortable.
