How long do saline implants last?

Thank you for your questions. There is some type of urban legend out there that implants need to be replaced every 10 years. The bottom line is that if you are happy with the implants in terms of appearance, softness, and shape, then there is absolutely no reason to have anything done. Your question is a common one.  The good news is that you don't have to change implants unless there is a problem or if you want a different "look".  So, relax and enjoy them :-)

Hello,You are getting into the lofty 1% club, and can expect a rupture in the near future. When is that? Nobody knows. However, if you love your breasts, than a removal and replacement should be quick and easy, especially if performed by an ABPS certified/ASAPS member surgeon. If you wait til one ruptures, you risk having asymmetry after your revision. Best of luck!

If you are not currently experiencing an issue with your implants, it shouldn't be an issue to leave them be. It is recommended to replace saline implants every 7-11 years while getting yearly mammograms. The new gummy bear implants look and feel very natural and are completely safe and natural looking. If you ever felt the need to change the implants, I personally prefer the new silicone gel implants. Hope this helps and best of luck in the future ! 

Great news!    Saline implants can last well-over 20 years!    I have been in practice 23 years, and a good number of the implants I have placed in my early career still are in place and look good.Many patients, however, choose to replace their implants based on changes in their bodies, having had children and needing a lift, or developing a desire for more natural-feeling breasts.  For these reasons, and not necessarily implant leakage, some patients exchange their saline implants for silicone.I tell my patients that the chance of a smooth saline implant leaking and needing replacement is under 10% at 10 years.   That is not all that much higher than the chance of a silicone implant rupturing at 10 years.   Interesting!

Saline implants as well as recent silicone implants have no expiration date. The 10 year rupture implants were a group of liquid silicone implants made in the 1980's. Of course any devise can fail at some point and need to be replaced. If you are happy with your implants thin you should sit tight. If you should get a saline leak or decide to exchange your implants the exchange operation is much easier on you than the original surgery and pocket dissection. But if one implant leaks go ahead and replace both implants. Good luck.

There isn’t a definitive date that saline breast implants need to be replaced.  In general, if they look good and feel good then you can keep them in.  However, implants are not life-time devices and eventually the implants will “wear out” and you will experience a deflation.  These odds increase with the age of the implants. Many women tell us they feel better being proactive by changing their old breast implants before they experience a sudden implant deflation.  I would recommend meeting with board certified plastic surgeons who are experienced with implant exchange surgery to discuss the best option for you.

Implants may last longer than 10 years, as yours have, and if they are intact and not giving you any problems there is likely no need to exchange them immediately.  Generally speaking, there is no time limit as to when or if you need to exchange your breast implants. I have heard from patients that they have heard that breast implants need to be changed every 10 years. The only reason you need to exchange your breast implants is if you are having a problem with them or if you would like to change the size. Some of the potential complications that may arise would be deflation, capsular contracture, bottoming out, or just size change. 

In other words, if you are happy with the size, shape and symmetry of your breasts and are having no problems, you do not need to do anything.
