How long does it take for a capsule (not capsular contracture) to form around the implant?

Thanks for your question -Breast capsules are a normal part of healing after breast implant surgery.  The formation starts in the first week or two and matures after about 12 weeks.  Capsular contracture, which is a dense, calcified or painful capsule, is not considered normal in breast augmentation and can develop in the immediate post-op period or decades later.I hope this helps!

The capsule forms relatively quickly.  By six weeks, the capsule is well established.  It will however continue to develop over time.  As for when you can stop wearing the surgical bra is a tricky question.  If you ask two surgeons, you may get 3-4 answers.  There really is no science to it.  My personal recommendation is that by 6 weeks, my patients can wear any undergarment they want.  Miracle, incredible, push-up, underwire, cross-you-heart... it really does not matter.   Or nothing.  That said, the size of the implant also plays a factor.  If the implants "fit" your body, then it should not be much of an issue.  If the implants are larger, then gravity will continue to work and a bra does help to support the breasts and keep the weight of the implant off of the skin and could help to minimize the changes over time.
