Following your plastic surgeon's post-op instructions can definitely contribute to the survival of your fat graft. You will likely experience a bit of discomfort as well as some swelling immediately following surgery and you'll want to avoid stressing the injection areas for up to 3 weeks in order for the extracellular matrix surrounding your fat grafts to have a chance to withstand minor stresses. Our post-op instructions include wearing surgical tape on facial areas for about 5 days, sleeping on your back with your head elevated for the first week, and avoiding any rubbing of the face for at least 2 weeks. The patient plays a very important role in helping the fact grafts to survive and thrive. That being said, the surgical technique used during the fat graft procedure also plays a crucial role in the success of survival. All fat grafting techniques are not created equal and the success of your outcome is highly dependent on how each of the steps of the surgery are performed.Be sure to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon experienced in performing facial fat grafting to discuss, in detail, the fat transfer procedure steps that will be used - including liposuction (harvesting) of the fat, centrifugation and processing of the fat, and reinfection of the fat.Best Wishes!
Thank you for your question in regards to fat transfer. The amount of fat taken, the harvesting process and injection technique are important factors on how long the fat will last. To be sure, see two or more board-certified plastic surgeons in your area for a full and complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have surgery. I hope this helps.
Hello iamhopeful,Thanks for your question.Fat graft survival success depends on many factors:Quality of fatTechnique of fat harvestUse of PRP (possibly)Location of fat placementHead elevation and icing after graft placementThings that diminish fat graft success include:SmokingHigh metabolismAggressive exerciseWeight lossPoor dietFat grafting has variable success in any condition. Greetings,Fat graft survival is most dependent on harvesting and processing technique, amount of fat grafted, and grafting technique. Unfortunately, there is still some degree of uncertainty with any graft, and results do vary from patient to patient. I would recommend consultation with a plastic surgeon who specializes in these techniques, view before and after photos, and even speak to some patients who have had the procedure. Please see this link for more information Good luck!
After 6-12 weeks if the fat is there, it stays forever in my experience unless you have extreme weight loss -- then you can lose fat everywhere. I suggest you see an expert and do sculptra/PRP to get long term improvement and maintenance of the fat. PRP and purgraft give the best outcome and viability. Best, Dr. Emer.
Fat transfer from the tummy or thighs to the face is an excellent option for people of all ages. Younger patients can enhance their cheekbones or lips with fat that is natural and long lasting. As we age, our face deflates, losing fat, causing sagging skin to look more obvious. Fat grafting to the face rejuvenates the face with biological filler, your own fat! I frequently use fat transfer to my facelift patients to enhance and prolong the result. Depending on the individual, one treatment does the trick, but sometimes secondary touch ups are needed. Best advice after fat grafting to the face, try not to touch your face a lot or rub it to allow the grafts to take. Be sure to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon. Good luck!
There are multiple options for restoring the face after a parotidectomy. Botox would not be a good option for volume but can help with some patients for Frey's syndrome. Frey's syndrome is where the parotid gland abnormally innervates to the face and causes sweating to the face. The pa...
You can have fat transferred from anywhere to anywhere! I would highly recommend that you do a morphing so that you can make sure what you are desiring will look better before you commit to you.
In my opinion, when performed well, facial fat grafting is the best "permanent" filler (for most areas...especially the cheeks and midface). Certainly there is a bit of "art" involved, since you are correct in saying that some of the fat will dissolve after transplant. As a general statement,...
