Steroid injections after a Rhinoplasty?

Do steroid injections really help after a rhinoplasty? If so, what is the purpose for them? Lastly, what are the pros and cons to steroid injections? Thank you.

Hello and thanks for your question. Steroid injections are sometimes part of the protocol used after rhinoplasty to minimize swelling and the buildup of scar tissue. It is more frequently seen in patients with thicker skin that may not heal as efficiently. These injections can be performed within weeks after the surgery or even years later if the results of the procedure have been less than satisfactory. While there are benefits of steroid injections for the right patient, there are drawbacks to the practice as well. In some circumstances, steroids can cause the tissue to atrophy and pull in, distorting the final appearance of the nose. For this reason, the use of steroids after rhinoplasty should be carefully weighed based on the benefits versus the possible risks. Steroid injections are necessary for patients who usually have thick skin After a rhinoplasty procedure. The steroid shots in the nose  are performed to reduce the swelling that occurs in that area routinely after a rhinoplasty procedure. Patients who have very thin skin rarely ever need steroid shot, however patients with thick skin almost always require  several after a rhinoplasty procedure
