Is it safe to get a facial with extractions? (Photo)

Question

I dont have much acne but what I've gotten on my face lately are white bumps. Similar to a white head. I saw a dermatologist and she recommended I get a facial with extractions. But how safe is an extraction and wont it leave scarring or open pores? Also my face is very sensitive and tends to dry out very fast.

Our treatments use combination therapy to improve the epidermis and dermis for most deep scars. The options available for acne scars depend on the character of your scars, in terms of topography and contour. We see atrophic and hypertrophic acne scars, as well as scars that have hypo and hyperpigmentation. We begin each scar evaluation with an assessment of scar quality and subtype. Our main concern is rebuilding collagen and that is why we use a HIDEF protocol that includes combination therapy. Morpheus 8, scar subcision, fibrous release, fractional laser, CO2 laser, Thulium laser, PDL Vbeam laser, and fractional resurfacing can be used in addition to TCA Cross and chemical peels to further improve skin. Patients should start Melarase AM and Melarase PM for active hyperpigmentation. Always begin with a consultation to decide whether early subcision should be started.

Looking at the photo you posted I would recommend a series of deep pore cleansing facial to extract the whiteheads.  There are so many different procedures that would address this issue you are having.  Remember that everyone's skin is different some people have more sensitivity then others.  I recommend you start with the basic treatments first such as the facial I recommended and see how your skin reacts.  If there is no changes than I would proceed to a more aggressive treatment. Facial extraction  should be done gently and with precaution not to exceed the limit of a simple extraction. As for your dry skin and sensitivity you should be on proper skin care regime that will correct your issue.  You already know that your dry and sensitive so you must use the appropriate products.

I agree that you need extractions.  From your picture it appears that you have an accumulation of sebum (oil) trapped in your pores.  You should consider having a mild lactic acid peel performed along with extractions.  There is no risk or downtime with such a mild treatment. Extractions are safe so long as they are properly done.  The skin needs to be prepped by regulating the existing sebum level in the skin, and then also by raising the Ph level of the skin to more alkaline state.  Extractor tools should never be used in my professional opinion.  I have seen many patients come in with scars from these tools.  -Fernanda Heckman, Paramedical esthetician at Gallery of Cosmetic Surgery

Facials with extractions are fine as long as they are done by a licensed esthetician to help reduce the risk for any post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or scarring. I would recommend using salicylic acid (either a cleanser a few times per week or chemical peel) to help break up some of the sebum under the skin to reduce acne breakouts and clogged pores. It appears from your photo you have congested skin. Facials with extractions will not damage your skin if done correctly. That being said, contact a certified dermatologist or a licensed aesthetician to start regular facials and chemical peels containg salicylic acid. A good medical skincare regime done on a daily basis will help break up the trapped sebum under the skin. It may take some time for your skin to clear up but it will be worth it! Good luck!
