Normal to be unable to pee after surgery? Had gynecomastia 1 day ago.

Hello good afternoon. Yesterday at around 5 pm, i had gynecomastia surgery and was put to sleep undr general anesthesia. After my surgery i was able too pee in the hospital but now that i am home, i am having so much difficulty peeing even though i feel my bladde full. Is that normal? It will be 24 hours since my surgery in a few hours. Should i be worried? Should i call my doctor?

It is important to let your surgeon know about your inability to urinate.  This could be related to the medications given during surgery, swelling after surgery, or irritation from having a catheter placed during your procedure.  Any time a patient has a surgical procedure under general anesthesia and they feel something is just not right, we encourage our patients to call the office immediately.

If it has been 6-8 hours since you last urinated, you may need some help. Speak with your surgeon. This can happen to some patients. Hopefully, the issue has resolved itself since you submitted your question....

Some people do have difficulty urinating after surgery. It can be for various reasons. If you can't empty your bladder, and it's been longer than 6-8 hours since last urination, you should talk to your doctor. A temporary catheter may be needed. Hopefully you have gotten help before you read this.
