Hello doctors i am 22 years old and i had a male mastopexy and gynecomastia removal 4 months ago. I enjoy the contour of my chest but i hate how horrible my scars look. I am so depressed and i feel really self conscious. Worst then before i had the surgery. Is there any way to fix this? My PS said they were hypertrophic but his nurse said they were keloids. I am so sad i feel like crying, i cant believe im 22 and my chest will look like this forever. How can I reduce tension via scar revision?

Answer: Scarring Keloids are a type of hypertrophic scarring. There are ways to treat this scarring. Consult your plastic about the options available to you. After a scar revision, your surgeon can suggest scar treatment therapies to reduce skin tension. Good luck and don't give up yet. Thank you for your question.

Answer: Injecting kenalog (a steroid) should help it is not your surgeons fault since this can happen to anyone. it is more likely to occur if you are young (22 years old is still young:)) or if the wound is closed under tension. However, injecting Kenalog once per month and maybe a total of 3 injections, should help flatten the scarring. if after waiting at least one year, it may be possible to surgically revise the scar in the office under local anesthetic. however, this could help but it is not a guarantee.remember, you are your own worst critic.david berman mdps just so that you don't think your nurse and doctor are fighting. it is a continuum between a hypertrophic scar and a keloid. by definition a "keloid" extends well beyond the boundaries of a normal scar.
