Tummy tuck - is it okay to continue taking spironolactone up unto surgery day?

Is it okay to continue taking spironolactone up unto surgery day? I take this medication for acne, it does lower my blood pressure to about 100/65 on average.

Hi there,thanks for your question. I would reccomend that you discontinue your medication 2 weeks prior to surgery. You should discuss this with whoever prescribes it.Hope that helps and best of luck with your surgery!

Hello! I would highly recommend talking this through with your surgeon prior to your surgery. At your pre-op appointment your surgeon should review your full medical history and current medications, and then discuss any changes that you may need to make prior to surgery. Be sure to inform them of any herbal supplements and/or over the counter medications you take as well.

First, it is important that you ask your surgeon this question about your particular situation.  In general, spironolactone can be continued through the day of surgery in most people.  Make sure your potassium level is normal, good luck.

If it is Acne, then you can stop it but it is best for you to check with your surgeon and see if he/she wants you to stop the medication.  I generally keep my patients on antihypertensive meds up to day of surgery but that is not the case here.

It is fine to take it up to the day of surgery and afterwards but you should be sure to stay very well hydrated postoperatively as spironolactone can cause you to be dehydrated.

This question is best answered by your surgeon as opinions vary.  it is important that you discuss all medications you take including prescription, over the counter and supplements.  Your surgeon will advise which are okay to continue and which need to be stopped.

Spironolactone is safe to use at the time of surgery.  I recommend letting your surgeon's office know that you are taking spironolactone for acne.  They may want to do a blood test, and they may want you to discontinue it for a short time before surgery.
