Does it take longer to recover from breast augmentation and lift if you had tuberous breasts?

Thank you for your excellent question.  In general, the more work needed to be performed in surgery, the longer the recovery time needed.  Because tuberous breast patients have a tighter skin envelope along their breast crease that needs to be released compared to a non-tuberous breast patient, it will take longer for your swelling to resolve, implants to settle, and skin to stretch.  You should see steady improvement each day with your results, and your comfort level.  Hang in there!

Anytime a lift is included with an augmentation, the recovery is going to take longer.  The muscle has to get used to the implant and the breast needs to heal from the lift and the work done on the tissue itself to assist it in forming a better shape with the implant.  It can take some patients quite awhile for the breasts to round and settle so just be patient.

Stretching that lower pole will take longer in someone with a constricted lower pole than in someone with a "normal" breast shape. In essence, the implant is forcing the breast to take on a more normal appearance and this will likely be 6 months in the making. Try to be patient. Tuberous breast deformity is one of the more challenging problems in breast surgery.

Thank you for your question and congratulations on your surgery.. Patients who have tuberous  breasts often requires a lot more surgery on the breast itself. It may involve a considerable releasing of some of the internal constriction of the breast. Consequently, you may feel more potential discomfort than someone who may have had a straightforward breast augmentation. Happy recovery.

A part of the complex of findings in those with tuberous breasts is a tight lower pole and inframammary crease.  This can be the most difficult thing to treat and you can expect that area to take longer to reach its final shape than when the same operation is performed on those without the deformity.

Some of the characteristics seen with tuberous breasts include a very narrow base, short distance from areola to inframammary fold, tight (constricted) lower pole of the breasts, relatively wide space between the breasts, "puffy" and areola and some degree of ptosis (drooping).
Generally, correction of tuberous breast anomalies involves breast augmentation with areola reduction / mastopexy procedure. The distance from the inframammary fold is increased (to create a more rounded out appearance). Proper implant positioning improves the distance (cleavage) between the breasts. The areola reduction helps to treat the pointed and "puffy" appearance of the areola.  
Patients should be aware that the final result will take months to see and that they will need to be patient and that revisionary surgery is more likely than in patients who do not present with tuberous (constricted) breasts. 
When you are ready, please make sure you consult with well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons who have significant demonstrable experience with this type of surgery. Ask to see lots of examples of their work and communicate your goals carefully as well.

your recovery time should be essentially the same as a non-tuberous

breast needs to heal from the lift and all the work done on the surrounding tissue

rn,This is a good question, because in many instances the delay in implant settling is longer than just for submuscular implants, as not only the muscle needs to stretch to accommodate, especially if the pectoralis muscle is not cut (I do not release the muscles to avoid loss of support), but the very tight skin that may be seen below the native constricted base fold also provides resistance to settling until it finally relaxes.  Sometimes downward compression with a compression band and protective underwire support is used to speed and facilitate settling, but that is problematic if you have a crease incision that needs to be protected (I use an axillary approach to avoid this issue), but also downward compression can cause undue tension on the mastopexy incision, if one was needed, especially for a vertical mastopexy approach.  Some milder forms of tubular malformation, with scant breast tissue development, or broader bases can be treated by augmentation alone, and in those instances compression may be easier to use. Ask you surgeon about what they recommend to facilitate implant settling and filling out of the lower pole folds.  I hope that this helps. The lower pole of the breast is deficient in the tuberous breast condition.  The skin and breast need to stretch and the force of the implant causes this stretch.  The lift part of the surgery tends to tighten the skin further, making the stretch process that much harder.  It will take time and I counsel my patients that it can take 6 to 12 months.  Try to be patient and keep in contact with your surgeon as the healing progresses.  Best wishes.
