I have hard lumps after Liposuction. Is this common?

I had my upper and lower abs, thigh and flank areas done. I now have bruised, hard and swollen lumps. I have a big one in my groin area which I should not of have because I didn't have work done down there. I know swelling and bruising are common, but hard lumps?? and in my groin? Is this common? Is there anything I can do to reduce it? I also have a weak stream when peeing a few days later also...please help!

Lumps after Liposuction in this area can be from localized edema (induration) or swollen lymph nodes in your groin. What you described is often normal after the procedure. Bruising and swelling are normal in the suctioned areas and usually increase slightly after the removal of any tape or foam. The bruising will decrease over 3-4 weeks, but may last as long as 6 weeks. The majority of the swelling will be gone within the first 3-4 weeks. However it may take 6-9 months to disappear completely. The compression garment helps reduce the swelling, and the longer it is worn, the more quickly the process will proceed. As you heal, the suctioned area may feel “lumpy” and irregular. This, too, decreases with time, and massaging those areas will hasten their softening. Follow up with your surgeon if concerned.

Liposuction is traumatic to the subcutaneous tissues. As such, hard lumps and swelling. Even peripheral to the areas treated can occur. This will improve with time.

It is common to have lumps, bumps, or induration/hardness after liposuction.  After two weeks I allow my patients to get lymphatic massage or to begin ultrasound treatments to help loosen the tighteness.  This typically will go away with compression, time, and exercise.  I suggest speaking with your surgeon regarding your concerns. Lumps in the groin could be a result of fluid that has moved downward after surgery. Hard lumps can develop after liposuction.  It also depends upon the technique used for liposuction. Best to ask your surgeon what he prefers.

I'm sorry you are having this problem following your liposuction... swelling is normal and some bruising is too. The hard lumps can be a few different things- the one in your groin is most likely a lymph node which can be swollen from the inflammation associated with the surgery but could also be swollen from infection.  If you have multiple hard lumps it is best to discuss this with your surgeon.  Give him or her a call and ask about your symptoms as I'm certain they would want to hear from you about your concerns.
