I have a seroma, surgeon's nurse said I can exercise now with/without compression. Is this correct?

Lipo done on Oct 10. 1 wk post op seroma was drained- 40cc. 2nd time 30cc aspirated 1 week later (3 days ago). Nurse said keep faja compression most of the time, but no restrictions now, yes I can exercise lifting weights & cardio. I have only dealt with this specific nurse & she knows my history. I still have a bit of fluid in the area but it has NOT gotten worse since I had it aspirated 3 days ago. Is this info correct? I dont want to make things worse if it is incorrect. Thanks!

Hi Tasha,Though there will be differences of protocol among different surgeons, most will restrict physical activity and encourage ongoing use of a garment until a seroma has resolved.I’m sure your nurse has your best interests at heart but I would reach out to your surgeon for an assessment and his/her opinion.Best of luck with your recovery.Dr Nodwell

I usually advise my patients not to exercise for the the first 6 weeks to avoid fluid collection, keep wearing your garment and consult this issue with your PS. Every surgeon has different post op care instructions.

Sorry to hear about the seroma.  I am glad to hear that it seems to be resolving.  In general, I would recommend avoiding strenuous activity until things have completely resolved as shearing of the skin can increase the fluid collection under the skin.  I agree with continuing the compression garment full time also until the seroma is completely gone.  I would also make sure you speak directly with your surgeon since everyone has a different protocol for post-op care.  Good luck!

It may not be a good idea to exercise with a recent seroma as more fluid is likely to accumulate. Best to ask your surgeon.

Thank you for your question.  If you have a seroma that is still being aspirated, I recommend keeping your exercise to a minimum until it is resolved.  Presumably, anything that increases your blood pressure or heart rate can increase the fluid in the seroma and delay its disappearance.  In addition, I recommend wearing your garment as much as possible.  Best wishes.

All surgeons have different protocols on post operative care and you should listen to your surgeon.  In my practice exercise is allowed after liposuction.  Seromas are unusual but when there is a seroma I usually have the patient hold off on vigorous exercise until it is resolved. If you are not comfortable with the information given by the nurse ask to speak to the surgeon.   Good luck
