Raised/Visible surgery scar - 7 weeks post-op: Will massage, silicone gel/sheets or compression tape help the healing? (Photo)

Question

I had eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) 7 weeks ago and am worried that I may have a permanent hypertrophic scar on one eyelid! It's raised above the incision line & lumpy beneath. My surgeon has no idea why & doctors here say that I should be patient & the scar will flatten and fade with time, however, the care advise has varied. Should I massage it daily, try silicone sheets/gel, try using medical compression tape or just leave it alone? NOTE: I have a VERY BAD reaction to all steroids!

Scars tend to do very well on the eyelid. There may be some epidermal cells trapped below the skin with a cyst beginning to form. Continue doing what you are doing and a simple needle de-roofing may be all that is required. Be patient. You will end up with a great result!

I have great news for you!In my experience this type of scar will pass almost completely.The dermis that is responsible for most scar tissue over-production is fortunately quite thin in the upper eyelid.  Generally the scars really will settle nicely as a result.I recommend you massage with any product containing dimethicone in the ingredient list.  This silicone polymer has been double blind prospective and randomized proven in science to reduce scars.  You can find this very inexpensively at nearly every pharmacy.  We like Scar Zone.  Massage in two minutes twice a day with lateral massage gently.  Be patient and I think you'll love your result!Dr. Hobgood

Dear Denise,I can see what you mean. Right now it does not look like a hypertrophic scar. You should definitely perform a proper scar massage 3 times a day with a silicone gel or scar creme. Also contact your PS to seek his or her advice. For upper eyelids you should see the final appearance of the scar after 3 to 4 month. All the best.
