Can people with illnesses, such as cancer or lupus, be a candidate for liposuction surgery?

Patients with chronic diseases are still candidate for liposuction if these illnesses are quiescent.

Liposuction certainly has an overall less traumatic effect on the body than many other plastic surgical procedures. That said, it is very important to get appropriate medical clearance prior to any surgical procedure if you have certain medical conditions. Remember… A well-trained and properly credentialed plastic surgeon is a physician first. It is our job to evaluate you globally and work with your other doctors to determine the safety of a procedure.Even with certain, potentially serious medical conditions, a careful evaluation of the risks and benefits associated with the procedure and a thorough discussion with the patient and their physicians may lead to the realization that they are an excellent candidate for surgical intervention. In some patients with certain medical conditions, doing the procedure under local anesthesia may be advantageous. History of Lupus or family history of cancer are not necessarily contraindications to having liposuction. As far as the Lupus , the type of lupus , body areas affected and present activity are all considerations before having surgery. The family history of cancer would need to be evaluated by your physician. You would need clearance from your attending physicians before liposuction but you may very well be able to have liposuction without problems. Garrett Crabtree MD
