Recommendations about the use of abdominal binders for compression after abdominoplasty varies significantly among surgeons. In the immediate postoperative period, the compression makes patients feel more comfortable and definitely helps with swelling. Many surgeons feel that this can also help reduce seroma formation. Because healing normally takes 2 to 3 months, I encourage patients to wear the garment around the clock for the first 3-4 weeks and then as much as they can tolerate for the next 4 to 6 weeks. There are no scientific studies regarding these recommendations that I am aware of.
Some surgeons use compression garments and some surgeons do not. I have gone back-and-forth with the use of these but now use them routinely. I have my patients were their garments for six weeks 23 hours a day. Please check with your particular surgeon as to his or her protocol concerning garments and abdominoplasty
I have my patient wear the compression garment 24/7 for 4 to 6 weeks, removing only for showering. Showering is allowed 24 hours after the drains are removed. This is what I do, you need to see what your surgeon recommends. Good luck!
You will get varying opinions on this subject from different surgeons. I do not use any type of compression garment immediately following tummy tucks. Most patients already feel very tight following the muscle and skin tightening associated with this procedure. I do not see any need to add another layer of external constriction created by a compression garment. You can heal just fine without any type of compression garment postoperatively. However, I would suggest that you discuss this topic with your individual board certified plastic surgeon that you have entrusted to do your procedure and recommend following your surgeon's advice. Best of luck in your recovery!
Bruising is certainly expected after a tummy tuck, and different patients will get different amounts of bruising. In the situation you describe, where you went back to surgery to stop some bleeding, it would be expected to have additional bruising. This bruising can show up a bit...
Plicating the muscles (internal corset) pulls the overlying tissue with it creating a bulge in the upper abdomen and if not spread out adequately will create a bulge. If you do a crunch and the bulge worsens, you have a weakness of that area. If you had a mini-tuck, this could be a...
Drains usually come out when they are down to 20cc per day. If yours were putting out 80cc, it is no surprise that you would have fluid collecting. The drain needs to go back in, or the seroma can be drained by your surgeon. Large weight loss patients have larger lymphatics,...
