Recommendations about the use of abdominal binders for compression after abdominoplasty varies significantly among surgeons. In the immediate postoperative period, the compression makes patients feel more comfortable and definitely helps with swelling. Many surgeons feel that this can also help reduce seroma formation. Because healing normally takes 2 to 3 months, I encourage patients to wear the garment around the clock for the first 3-4 weeks and then as much as they can tolerate for the next 4 to 6 weeks. There are no scientific studies regarding these recommendations that I am aware of.
Some surgeons use compression garments and some surgeons do not. I have gone back-and-forth with the use of these but now use them routinely. I have my patients were their garments for six weeks 23 hours a day. Please check with your particular surgeon as to his or her protocol concerning garments and abdominoplasty
I have my patient wear the compression garment 24/7 for 4 to 6 weeks, removing only for showering. Showering is allowed 24 hours after the drains are removed. This is what I do, you need to see what your surgeon recommends. Good luck!
You will get varying opinions on this subject from different surgeons. I do not use any type of compression garment immediately following tummy tucks. Most patients already feel very tight following the muscle and skin tightening associated with this procedure. I do not see any need to add another layer of external constriction created by a compression garment. You can heal just fine without any type of compression garment postoperatively. However, I would suggest that you discuss this topic with your individual board certified plastic surgeon that you have entrusted to do your procedure and recommend following your surgeon's advice. Best of luck in your recovery!
Bruising is certainly expected after a tummy tuck, and different patients will get different amounts of bruising. In the situation you describe, where you went back to surgery to stop some bleeding, it would be expected to have additional bruising. This bruising can show up a bit...
If you have a 'hernia' like protrusion, you should speak to your surgeon and perhaps get an ultrasound or a CT to see what's going on. Each surgeon does the muscle repair differently. If a continuous suture was used, it is unlikely that you would have a hernia-like protrusion, as the...
Seromas can be very annoying and can take a long time to resolve. It's best to treat them right away. Aspirations, or a placement of a new drain as soon as possible (within days, not tonight ;-) ) are the way to go.
Swelling can persist for many months after surgery. The incision sometimes feels firm and swollen for the longest period of time. One reason for this is that there are numerous sutures below the skin that can take many months to be absorbed. Even after healing, the tissue can remain firm...
I think you will probably need a revision. might need to wait 6 months to a year for things to loosen up. I am sure your doctor will be able to make things right. my guess is that he is not thrilled either
