Is it a good idea to wear a belly button shaper after a tummy tuck?

I do this on a case by case basis but not routinely. I will have my patient wear one if it looks like it is healing a little bit tight.

Your surgeon will shape/sculpt the belly button in the operating room. There should be no need for a belly button shaping device (unless that's part of your surgeon's usual care pathway). I wouldn't suggest an unsterile marble...trying to force anything into the belly button after surgery risks tearing the just-healed tissue, likely at the junction between belly button and abdominal wall skin.

Some belly buttons will benefit from a "shaper." Your surgeon will decide the need and more importantly the timing of use, depending on the post operative appearance and healing.

Thank you for sharing your question. A belly button shaper is not required after a tummy tuck procedure as the area can not close assuming no healing issues develop.

Hi. Not all belly buttons need a shaper so it is best to check with your surgeon. But if necessary, it is best to wait about a month before using a silicon belly button because silicone does affect scarring. If used too soon, it might make the scar too week.

Your surgeon knows your condition well and has preferences on when and what to use for faster healing and recovery. Post operative care and management depends on the type of surgery performed and the technique used during surgery among other factors.It is best, however, that you follow your plastic surgeon's advice on post operative care management for a smooth and faster healing and recovery.

Typically a shaper for the belly button is not necessary after a tummy tuck. If you have concerns, or if your surgeon feels you would benefit from having one you can discuss the most appropriate device during your appointment.

In our practice we do not permit insertion of a marble or "belly button shaper" into the umbilicus in the early postoperative period as it may compromise its circulation. One should avoid manipulation of the area. The belly button is "skeletonized" during abdominoplasty and it's circulation is of utmost importance. In addition, unless sterilized, the material may be a source of infection.
After the incision becomes a healing scar (after a month or so), insertion of a foreign object will not be of harm. Silicone spacers are available. The incisions must be completely closed and scab free. However, its benefits are uncertain.
