I need to drive 4 hours 5 days after having a BBL

Question

I need to know what precautions i can take to drive home after having a bbl done. I live in tampa and will be traveling to miami to have the surgery, i am traveling back 4 days later. what can I do to avoid jeopardized the results?

There are no hard and fast rules on when to drive after this procedure.  Most would recommend six to eight weeks before driving for four hours. You must have an open dialogue with your surgeon about driving for four hours five days after an uneventful BBL.    The main risk is related to development of a blood clot in the legs that can then migrate to the lungs. Sitting for long periods of time puts you at higher risk due to being stationary. You must take frequent breaks (every 30 minutes) from sitting. However, you must realize that pressing the accelerator and applying the brake put pressure on the buttocks and back even with support from the pillow under your thighs.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Thank you for your question.Please have somebody accompany you after surgery for safety reasons. You may flat on your stomach to preserve the grafted fat. However, I recommend staying overnight close by for your own comfort to rest. Please speak with your surgeon if you are concerned.Regards,

BBL outcomes are entirely dependent upon graft viability and survival. The greater the survival, the more successful the outcome. These grafts are very pressure sensitive as pressure decreases local blood flow which then potentially compromises the graft take.
The recommendations for prolonged sitting/unrelieved pressure will vary from one physician to another. I generally recommend avoiding prolonged sitting for a month or so. Occasional rest periods for sitting using a specialized pillow with escalating frequency and length are progressively integrated as a patient heals.
With reference to your specific question, a traditional desk job should be avoided for at least a few weeks. A specialized pressure relief pillow is an absolute. I recommend patients work towards 1 hour total of seated resting per day by the 4 week mark. If you must drive for several hours, I would recommend a pillow and frequent stops to rest and offload.

I do not recommend sitting right after surgery.  Lying on your stomach will help prevent putting any pressure on your buttocks. Good luck!

I don't recommend that my patients sit for extended periods of time for about 2 months after a BBL. Too much pressure on the buttock may cause deformities or loss of integrity/shape of your BBL. That's not to say that you can't sit for two months. There is a technique where you can place a pillow underneath your thighs and sit on that. Your weight and the pressure is now placed on your thighs instead of you buttock and the buttock essentially "hangs" off the pillow. If you can do this comfortably while driving, then great! Lastly, I do NOT recommend driving if you are still taking your pain medications.

You are best to avoid sitting on your buttocks on the trip home. Lying prone on your stomach is probably best.  You are also best to have the surgery closer to home.  Review instructions with your surgeon.
