Kickboxing/MMA with breast implants?

Question

I had a mommy makeover almost two years ago, and have started kickboxing. My coach wants me to start with jujitsu as well, but I'm not sure how that will be with my implants. Should I be worried? Can they pop, or is that an old wives tale?

With this type of cosmetic surgery you certainly want to weigh your risks. Boxing or MMA fighting can cause significant trauma to the breasts and implants. The implants may not necessarily "pop" but it could cause issues with the placement of the implants or even a rupture. An implant rupture can lead to future issues or discomfort in the breasts. Definitely consult with a board certified plastic surgeon regarding your options. Best of luck!

Thank you for your question. Although the implant shells are much sturdier than they were ten years ago, they can rupture when subjected to repeated trauma. You need to evaluate the risks of implant rupture verse the enjoyment you receive kickboxing or jujitsu. Hope this helps.

Your implants are at risk from any kind of heavy blow to the chest. So, you will have to weight those risks in deciding on whether or not to start kickboxing. Assuming that you can protect your chance, give it a go.My best,

Thank you for your question.  LIfe is always about choices, and if kickboxing and jujitsu are the activities you would like to pursue then go ahead.  As these are intensive contact sports it is possible to have some injury to your implants such as malpositioning or displacement of the implant, or rupture, although unlikely.

Thanks for your inquiry.  You ask a great question.  In truth all forms of trauma can injury your implants.  Kickboxing, sparring are no exceptions.  Your choice to train with jujitsu or other fighting forms is personal choice with its own risks. Good Luck.

Certainly there increase risks with a sport which is traumatic. However, there is no specific reason not to participate in kickboxing simply because of breast implants.

Thanks for your question. Implants are very durable prostheses. There is no evidence that forceful contact with the breast/implant will cause them to pop. I have heard of people attributing rupture to car air bags, however, this has not been proven. I tell my patients (once they have completed the healing process) that they should not limit their activity because of their implants.

Hi PsyKatThe answer is yes.  Implants are man made devices which will ultimately fail.  Implants have been ruptured during routine mammograms as well.Implants are very durable however, and I would just advise you to go on and live your life.  The implants come with a warranty.  Evaluate what is important to you, and make an informed decision.Be careful out there!Sek

Today's breast implants are much sturdier than implants made prior to 2006, and they are still susceptible to breakage when submitted to significant trauma. During your fitness training, you can wear a chest protector to spread the force of a blow to your breasts.
