Is feeling sore after emsculpt to be expected?

Hi Nilemaiden,Some patients may feel a little soreness 2 to 3 days after Emsculpt, others don't feel much at all.  Whether you have soreness or not will not affect your results. I personally had a single paddle 30 minute session immediately followed by a two paddle 30 minute abdominal session and did not feel sore afterwards.  Though some patients may see results after 2 to 3 sessions, we ask our patients to return for their initial post treatment photos at 6 weeks.  Results should be seen by 2 months.  Results vary depending on the individual patient, their body shape, their overall health, fitness, diet, etc.  Good luck and be well.

The machine has a cycle run at intervals that pulses the lactic acid out of the muscles so that you typically don't have as much soreness as you would expect. This can range from no soreness to mild soreness. Be patient as results reveal themselves in 3-8 weeks after treatment and ideally a good diet and exercise regimen is maintained this entire time.

The part of the treatment that has the consecutive taps helps to break up the lactic acid, thus minimizing soreness. This procedure takes about 6-8 weeks after the 4th treatment to see full results. This is because the fat reduction takes a bit longer. Please consult with your physician at that time and evaluate results to determine how strong your results are. It is normal to have some soreness after an EMSculpt treatment. It should not be painful, rather it feels like how you would after an intense workout. It is also normal to not feel any soreness after the treatment. The level of soreness is not an indicator of results. Results typically show 1-3 months after your last treatment. It is possible to experience no soreness or soreness similar to an intense workout. Give it a little more time to access your final results and follow up with your provider. Great question! EMSCULPT is a non-invasive treatment and requires no recovery time. The EMSCULPT procedure feels like an intensive workout. It induces very strong (supramaximal) muscle contractions, not achievable during workout, but you can lay down and relax during the treatment! Whether you experience soreness is patient dependent. 

Great question.  Whether you experience soreness is patient dependent.  Some patients will experience soreness and others may not.  The treatment is optimized to minimize soreness as it helps the lactic acid built up in the muscle dissipate quickly.  Gjve it about 4 weeks after the 4th treatment before looking for results.  It is best to follow-up with your provider to compare before and after pictures as well as discuss future maintenance.

The Emsculpt device cycles between contractions and pulsating the treatment area in order to help work the lactic acid out of the muscles.  Some patients do not feel sore afterwards, while other do.  Studies have shown that results start to show around 4-6 weeks after the final treatment and optimal results tend show two to three months after the full series of treatments.   In our office we have noted that most patients do not see a result at 4 weeks, but do see good changes at 8 weeks.

Soreness after exercise is due to buildup of lactic acid in the muscles.     It takes few days for the lactic acid to eventually get neutralized to normal pH.    Lactic acid builds because you are not oxygenating the muscles fast enough.   So if you can get oxygen to the muscles fast enough, you might not build up lactic acid as much.   Now I did my own experiment, as doctors always like to do.    
It's human nature to get tense and not breath when the EmSculpt is activating your muscles like you are having a contraction about to deliver a baby.      We hold our breath during those contractions.   I did this and I was very sore.    Next time I did this I relaxed,   breath through the contractions, and I was not sore.   It also made the treatment much more tolerable.     
While EmSculpt does do a good job of pushing the lactic acid out of your muscles during the rest tapping phase, you can make the soreness less by relaxing and breathing deeply during treatments.
Just my own personal observation. 

The degree of soreness - or whether you get soreness at all - will depend both on the treatment intensity and your musculature.  The different rhythms you felt during treatment alternated those to maximize muscle contraction and those to break up the lactic acid that would otherwise cause the soreness.  My nurse and I had identical treatments -  she felt mild soreness the next day, I didn’t. Regarding results -  It does take 4-6 weeks to see results.  Many of us are also recommending 1-2 booster treatments 1-3 months after your first treatment series to maximize improvement.
My recommendation is that you make an appointment for follow up with your physician at about a month after you completed your series (or at the interval suggested by your physician).  You can review your photographs and results and discuss maintenance.
