Can this procedure be used on upper arms? I lost muscle tone in upper arms from having had a bilateral mastectomy.

Hi dcook,Emsculpt has been FDA approved for the treatment of the abdomen and the buttocks.  There are practices that will treat other areas such as the arms.  I agree with Dr. Avaliani that it depends on the expertise of the practitioner to decide the safety and efficacy of treating "off-label" areas with Emsculpt.  There is not a contra-indication to treating the arms of patients who have had mastectomy.  Good luck and be well, God Bless.Dr. P 

Thank you for your question.  In general, EMSCULPT is FDA approved and was studied for abdominal and buttock area muscle toning. If it works in one area, it works in another. My practice is comfortable performing this on the arms. Having had a mastectomy before is not a contraindication to receiving this treatment and the number of treatment sessions will depend on your current muscle tone and the desired result you are looking to achieve. At this point, the Emsculpt is only FDA approved for the abdomen and the buttock area. Off label have known some physicians who have used the template on the arm. It may be hard to fit in the upper arm area correctly, but I know it has been done. The company also may be in the future coming out with smaller templates to fit arms and other body parts.

Much of the treatable areas with EMSCULPT are determined by the applicators - right now EMSCULPT is approved for abdominals and buttocks, and the applicators are designed with these areas in mind. However, since arms are such a demand, I believe the company is researching the viability of applicators specific to arms! Be patient and hope =).Otherwise, a practitioner may choose to use the device 'off-label' or against specific approvals but that is per-practitioner and entirely dependent upon their comfort level and experience.
