Bloating after Liposuction Bruising and swelling (bloating) are normal in the suctioned areas and usually increase slightly after the removal of any tape or foam. The bruising will decrease over 3-4 weeks, but may last as long as 6 weeks. The majority of the swelling will be gone within the first 3-4 weeks. However it may take 6-9 months to disappear completely. The compression garment helps reduce the swelling, and the longer it is worn, the more quickly the process will proceed. The other major reason is constipation which is common after decreased activity during recovery and from narcotic pain medications. If you have any concerns about extreme bloating, notify your plastic surgeon to get it examined.
Patients will often underestimate the constipating effects of narcotic pain medications, that being said "extreme" bloating is concerning enough for you to seek medical attention. You should call your surgeon for evaluation.
The simple answer is no you would typically have swelling but not abdominal bloating. If this bloating is persistent and/or happens after meals I would definitely contact your surgeon for evaluation.
It is normal to have swelling, but not normal to have anything "extreme" and I would suggest you see your doctor if you are concerned. Best, Dr. Emer.
Some swelling is expected after liposuction. Anything you consider extreme should be reported to your surgeon.
Swelling after liposuction is usually the worst around postoperative day 3. It will slowly resolve over the ensuing month along with the use of a good compression garment.Abdominal "bloating" is not normal, per se, nor are symptoms of the GI variety. There may be some constipation related to anesthesia or postoperative pain medications, but anything beyond a few days of this is concerning and should be addressed with your plastic surgeon.

Complete healing from liposuction sometimes follows a rockier course. With any type of procedure, the body forms scar tissue underneath in all the treated areas. One property of this scar tissue is that between about months two and three it tightens up and can form firm areas. This is the basis...
