Could swollen bilateral inguinal lymph nodes be related to the tummy tuck in April 2023?

My strong suggestion is that you see your surgeon to evaluate what's happening. Certainly, they need to rule out other reasons for enlarged lymph nodes and determine what else could be going on. I understand your concern. Generally speaking, lymph nodes react to nearby infections or other processes and it is most likely not caused by previous surgeries. However, without a proper assessment, it would be difficult to determine what is wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment or ask for a second opinion. It might be related to the tuck, but you might need a biopsy or CT scan just to be certain that nothing is being overlooked. Go talk to your medical doctor.

There are many potential causes for swollen lymph nodes including your tummy tuck. It would be unusual for them to not become swollen until several months after surgery, so it may be from another cause. Regardless it is best to follow up with your primary care physician if you are not able to reach your surgeon.

Hello, there should be no nodes in the groin as a result of the surgery, the nodes may be altered by infectious processes or neoclassicisms more frequently, perhaps also by some obstruction of lymphatic drainage, you should perform a physical evaluation and studies to see what the cause.

This exact thing happened with one of my patients several years ago.

A small group or single set of reactive nodes is not uncommon with any inflammation such as surgery. They are usually less than a centimeter in diameter and they don't last long. If they persist or are enlarging, that is a problem! They are likely not related to the Tummy tuck. Very thin people can often feel nodes that are normal. Post surgery you may have just discovered them by more attention to the area. If new they need evaluation. If expanding they need a fresh evaluation. Don't be passive about this.

Now back to my patient. She was 6 months post op and came if for this same issue. New lymph nodes. I sent her immediately to a General surgeon for biopsy because it is unusual. Unfortunately hers were a melanoma of unknow source.

It is possible that the enlarged lymph nodes are related to the abdominoplasty as we not only cut through skin and fat but there are also lymphatic channels which get cut as well in the lower abdomen/groin area depending on how low and long your scar is. Lymphatics can take 1 1/2 year to reconstitute and lymphatic flow goes from your lower extremities upward so they may swell after a block from scar tissue. But you do not mention how large the lymph nodes are and often they can flow around a block by using deep channels unless those also are obstructed from some reason like pelvic surgery or something pressing on it inside. Generally when they say "benign appearing" about lymph nodes it means the internal architecture is preserved so that makes us worry less about cancer inside the lymph node which messes up the internal signals. But just to be safe, i would see my gynecologist or doctor especially if i haven't had a pelvic or rectal examination in awhile and rule out any other reason for obstruction, especially if there has been any change in your bladder or bowel habits.

Noticing palpable lymph nodes is usually not a reason for a concern. I suggest you make a follow up appointment with your surgeon.
