Under eye filler nightmare, any suggestions on how to stop watery eyes and swelling 6 months post-op?

Hi Duckie.  In rare instances, we have seen reactions like yours to dermal filler injections under the eyes.  Specifically when we have used more than one syringe for correction and the product needs to be placed next to the inner corner of the eye.  There is a tear duct here that can get pressured and backed up, causing the more profound swelling you show in the photos.  But after dissolving the product and starting over, the subsequent eye watering you are seeing should not be related to the injections and would recommend an eye exam with your opthalmologist.  Best of luck.

I think its best to seek advise form an Ophthalmologist to see what the cause is for your watery eyes. if the filler is still there it might be causing pressure on the tear ducts. but this is all speculative. without examination by an expert it will just be a guessing game. 

I’m so sorry to hear this. I have seen this once in my practice and it was with the same product, and it eventually resolved. It is extremely frustrating for the patient (as well as the doctor). You can see delayed-onset hypersensitivity with these fillers even though they are made of materials that are normally found in the body. It sounds like you have had the right treatment if they have dissolved the filler and treated with antibiotics and steroids. It would be worth seeing an ophthalmologist for a more comprehensive eye exam to rule out another cause of the swelling. If it really is a hypersensitivity from the filler, it should eventually resolve but can take months. And I would caution you on receiving fillers in this area in the future. You may want to consider a surgical option or even fat injections. 

After 6 years, this is unlikely due to your filler treatment. If it persists, I recommend you follow up with an ophthalmologist. Best, Dr. Emer

I think it is safe to say you should stop with filler. You may consider lower blepharoplasty where the natural under eye fat pads are repositioned to the hollow area.

I do not believe the watery eyes is a consequence of your filler.  I would recommend seeing an ophthalmologist to get this problem under control.  I hope it works out for you!

Hello Duckie31,If you are continuing to have recurrent episodes of swelling you need to have your filler dissolved and not replaced.  I would be hesitant to follow up in a place that is not keeping a record of what is being injected.  Once the filler has been dissolved if the problem fails to resolve then you should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist to assess your eyelids and why the eye is so watery.  Now it is normal to have some swelling with filler but it should not persist beyond two weeks.  Since you are having recurring episodes I would certainly hold off of any filler injections to the tear trough until it is determined what is going on.
