Arnica tablets before surgery: when and how many?

Question

I bought some Arnica omeopathy pills to reduce bruising as suggested on this website, but the box doesn't mention how many I should take and I'm a bit confused. Each pill contains 15mg of Arnica. How many pills/how often should I take them and how many days before surgery should I start taking them? Thanks

Hello! Thank you for your question! The recommendations for the use of these homeopathic medications are surgeon preference. I typically suggest the use of Arnica Montana to decrease swelling and bruising. It is an herbal medication that is propagated from the seeds of an herb. I, as well as my patients, have seen some benefit with the treatment in the postoperative period. Although there is little evidence to its effectiveness, I believe there is some benefit, and no harm. I recommend 4-5 tablets under the tongue 4x/day for 3-5 days prior and 5-7 days after the procedure. Hope that this helps! Best wishes!

Thanks for your questions! Every plastic surgeon has different pre and post-operative care protocols, but I typically recommend my patients start taking Arnica pills, two days before surgery. Hi, since this medication's purpose is to decrease swelling and bruising, it is recommended to take after the surgery. It is still best to consult with your surgeon to ensure that it is safe to take with your pain medications. Also, make sure to follow the instructions provided by your plastic surgeon when moving forward with your healing process and make sure you get plenty of rest and treat the incisions well. Circumferential pressure (garment) is recommended for 4-6 weeks,  but you may switch to an exercise garment (Lycra or Spandex) beyond that.

Arnica has anticoagulant properties. This could result in increased bleeding during surgery. In my practice, we use the cream form quite effectively to treat bruises that develop after surgery.
