This is the usual scenario of the postoperative buccal fat pad removal... One side always swells more then the other... Wait a week for the swelling to diminish... If you have progressive pain, and a fever, got to your surgeon... Other wise be patient until the inflammation process resolves. Thank you.
in my practice, 90% of the buccal fat removal patients have minimal welling during the few post days after surgery. Most of the time, the swelling is minimal and last for 2 days.in 10% of my patients the selling is severe, usually in one side and it can last for up to a week or 10 days.In my practice, when a patent has significant swelling after surgery the patient is recommended to follow up right away to double check that signs are secondary to swelling and no other potential complications like infection or saliva accumulation. Patients with questions and concern about their buccal fat removal recovery should contact the plastic surgeon that performed the procedure to address these concerns and determine if there is need any need of management
It is normal and expected to see some swelling on day 2 - its usually worst than on day 1. I usually like to have my patients wear a compressive garment as well as ice for the first three days to minimize the swelling. That being said, buccal space infections can be quite dangerous. Tenderness, redness, or anything "leaking" from the incisions inside the mouth are a cause for concern. There are reasons intraoperatively as to why you may have more swelling on one side than another, so I would contact your doctor's office as it is important to know if this is what they are expecting for you or if its something to be concerned about. Best of luck! Congratulations on your procedure - the worst part is over and now its just a matter of allowing the healing to occur.
