Question

My checks are so swollen, very painful and are hard as rocks. It's difficult to open my mouth to eat. How long can I except for recovery. I was told it was a very simple procedure and would have very little down time. Thank you!

In my practice, buccal fat removal is associated with minimal pain, discomfort or swelling in about 90% of the patients. However, in 10% of the patients the swelling is significant ( they look like "potato head") ,have some paint and may have some difficulty opening their mouth. This usually resolves in several days ( approximately 10 days) with conservative management like icing and anti-inflammatory medications.

Patients with moderate/ severe swelling and paint after buccal fat removal MUST follow up with their surgeon and follow up his/ her instructions. Nobody like your surgeon ( rather than realself advice) will ensure best recovery for you.

Thank you for the question and sharing the image. Recovery after a typical Buccal Fat Pad Removal is quite smooth. There is a mild amount of welling but what your images show is a lot more than I would expect.

This is likely not an emergency and I am sure it will subside but you should contact your surgeon to make sure it is not a collection of blood or saliva after injury to the salivary duct which is right next to the buccal fat pad.
