Hello, I'd like to get some liposuction done and that includes my back area. I was told I'd need to treat enlarged veins on my back treated first. I'm wondering is this is something that can be done by one doctor in the same surgery? I'd rather not be running around to different places but my old dermatologist worried me by saying I should see a specialist who only takes appoints once a month and that she didn't feel comfortable doing it. Another derm didn't think it was hard of a procedure. Ty
Answer: Vein treat with liposuction An experienced plastic surgeon would have no problem performing liposuction with the veins present. If you want them treated they can also be treated. I suggest you see a board certified plastic surgeon who has experience with liposuction. All the best to you, Dr. Nancy de Kleer

Answer: Combination of procedures Dear llagrosa, I understand your concern. It is best however that you consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine whether you can have several aesthetic surgeries in one session, as this would depend on various factors including but not limited to your general health condition, the type of anesthesia that will be used, and the type of surgeries that will be performed among others. Answer: Getting Liposuction My practice has been devoted to doing on the Liposuction in a fat transfer procedures for the last 10 years. Before that I spent the first half of my career doing general plastic surgery. The one thing I can tell you from having specialized in this procedure is that delivering consistent quality Liposuction results is far more difficult than most people believe. To minimize the chance of having and favorable outcomes Patience should make a strong effort in finding the most talented and experienced provider in their community for this procedure. Personally I see no reason whatsoever to treat your varicose veins unless you personally feel you want them treated. My best guess is that the majority of plastic surgeons have very little experience with sclerotherapy or any form of varicose vein treatment. The chance of finding someone who is really good at Liposuction and also offers vein treatments is going to be unlikely. If it was your plastic surgeon who insisted on treating your varicose veins first then maybe having a few more consultations with other plastic surgeons could be an option to either find someone willing to do it without the van treatment or you may stumble upon someone who can do both at the same time. When consulting with plastic surgeons I recommend always having in person consultations. During the consultation ask each provider to show their entire collection of before and after pictures of the areas you’re interested in having treated. Sing a handful of pictures that in reality are the best results of that providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of what average results look like. The reason to ask providers to show more pictures as they get an idea of what average results look like, less than results look like and ideal outcomes look like. It also gives you a chance to confirm how many of these procedures the provider has performed. A moderately experience provider should have no difficulty showing you 30 or more sets of before and after pictures for the area you’re interested in. Highly experienced providers will have several hundred or even thousands of before and after pictures for each anatomic area. Liposuction is permanent and irreversible and if not done well the results can look disfiguring. Good luck with your decision making and upcoming procedure. Mats Hagstrom MD
