My grandfather died of a blood clot at 39 he however was a very heavy smoker and had hardening of the arteries at a young age. My question is would I be considered high risk with this being my only family history? I am a normal BMI healthy, exercise regularly. Do not smoke. Do not take recreational drugs and drink socially. I have terrible health anxiety so I am very concerned, but I have booked my surgery for seven weeks time.
Answer: Risk of blood clots Hello, thank you for your question. There is a risk of developing a blood clot during every surgical case when anesthesia is involved, the risk is the same for each patient. If you do have a family history of DVT or PE then that would increase your risk even if you are not a smoker. There are a list of other factors that can contribute to risks of blood clots. I would speak to your plastic surgeon about your concern.

Answer: Surgery Just based on what you wrote, you do not have an increased risk with surgery. If everyone in the family had blood clots, then you would be at higher risk. Please discuss all your concerns during your consultation.

Answer: Overall health, genetics and cosmetic surgery Regarding your overall health, including predisposition to cardiovascular disease, I suggest you talk to your primary care physician. Blood clots can have certain risk variables and are also just some extent somewhat random. I don’t think your information allows us to give you any specific ability to assess risk, though not having surgery is less risk than having surgery. Some medical complications are inevitable, but these tend to be fairly rare in comparison to other issues related to cosmetic surgery, such as undesirable outcomes. Patients can increase their odds of long-term positive outcomes by making sure that they have been thorough in their process of vetting providers, and provider selection. I recommend all patients have multiple in person, consultations before considering having permanent irreversible body contouring procedures. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their entire portfolio and show you their entire collection of before, and after pictures of previous patients with similar body characteristics to your own. An experienced plastic surgeon should have no difficulty showing you the before and after pictures of at least 50 previous patients. Augmentation mastopexy is a moderate risk procedure that has slightly higher revision rates than other plastic surgery operations. Some surgeons prefer to do this as separate splits procedures to decrease complication rates. My best guess is most plastic surgeons do these as combined single procedures. Provider selection is the one variable patients have control over, and I suggest maximizing that one piece of leverage to its fullest. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
