What advice can you offer for my pre-operative assessment query? Can I still get surgery?

Question

Hello, I had a partial left sided nephrectomy at 4 months old. Completely resolved. I'm under urology for stress incontinence at present. There's a record on my medical notes for mild depressive illness (2009) under the active section. I'm nervous that this will be an issue at my preoperative assessment next week. Can anyone offer advice? I'm 37, fit, healthy, non drinker

Hello, thank you for your question and for sharing that part of your history. Plastic Surgery is an elective surgery it is not urgent or life threatening if not completed. With that being said a pre screening with your medical doctor and your nephrologist should be completed to see if you are deemed safe for plastic surgery. There are certain circumstances that you can proceed with the surgery but may require more in hospital surveillance and monitoring which may not be provided in a private clinical setting. Speak to your nephrologist and family doctor about the matter. wishing you best of luck .

it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. You might need to get a clearance from your nephrologist. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations.

As part of your consultation your surgeon will review your medical history, current medications, and examine you.  Any concerns will be discussed during this time.  Based on the information provided you will likely be a candidate for the procedure.  Your surgeon will let you know if any pre operative testing or clearance is needed.

If you medical physician gives you a medical clearance for elective surgery, then it should be no problem for you to have surgery.

The kidneys are paired organs. A single functioning kidney is sufficient to support a normal life and should not affect surgical outcome if your kidney function tests are normal.
A past history of mild depression also should not be significant, especially as it is in the past! A present history of depression warrants investigation before a cosmetic surgical procedure is performed.
