Hi, I am getting my breast augmentation done in 4 weeks time and I'm getting really worried about the anesthetic. Will antidepressants effect the anesthetic? Really appreciate your answers. Thankyou

Answer: Anti-depressants and surgery - #plasticsurgery By some estimates, approximately 20% of plastic surgery patients take antidepressants. I am not sure that reflects my patient population, but the drug class is not uncommon. You should discuss your concerns with your surgeon as well as his or her anesthetist.

Answer: General anesthesia and antidepressants It's important to discuss your current medications with your surgeon pre-operatively. Certain antidepressants may interact with or affect the metabolism of general anesthetic agents. Discontinuing antidepressants is not recommended however without first consulting your health care professional; this could lead to withdrawal or discontinuation syndromes with significant medical risks. If your surgeon has any concerns regarding your specific medications, s/he may have you see your anesthetist in consultation before surgery to ensure you are medically optimized.Best, Stephanie Power MD, FRCSC
