Do lips swell more from Restylane than from Juvederm?

Dear annongirl324,dermal fillers have a significant swelling post injection. I would follow up with you plastic surgeon but typically I tell all my patients to wait a full two weeks.  Generally at 2 weeks they are happy and glad they didn't dissolve.  Dissolving is unpredictable as well.Daniel Barrett, MD

Lips can be swollen after injection from either product. It can take up to two weeks for the swelling to completely resolve, but typically the majority is gone after a few days. You may want to use cold compresses intermittently to help.

Hi there. Thanks for the question. If we're going straight by the water-drawing component of the those fillers, Restylane has 20mg/mL and Juvederm has 24mg/mL...this means that Juvederm technically draws in more water, which MAY result in more swelling. In my experience, this has been the case. My guess would be that the injection technique may have been different than last time or your body is just responding differently to the Restylane than it did to the Juvederm. Good news is that most swelling is down at about 3 days and by 7 days you're wanting more filler! ;)
Some ice and ibuprofen are ok too. If the swelling gets worse, call you injector. We always want to know and some will give you a Rx for a prescription anti-inflammatory steroid if they feel you need it.

Typically Restylane produces less swelling than Juvederm product but it sounds like that's not the case for you. Lips do tend to swell, sometimes dramatically, post injection for around 24-48 hours. Your end result will be at 2 weeks. While you are still in the swelling phase you can use ice or cool compresses (wrap in cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin), sleep with extra pillow to elevate your head at night, or take an antihistamine after checking with your doc (I don't know your medical history or medication allergies). Hang in there and if you are not loving your lips, see your injector at 2 weeks. Most will not reinject or dissolve filler until after 2 weeks. 

Restylane SILK causes significant swelling in the majority of people who have it injected in their lips.  Restylane-L, on the other hand, tends to cause LESS swelling than Juvederm.  The amount of swelling is often asssociated with the physical structure of the hyaluronic acid and the amount of cross-linking present.
I recommend you hang in there! Often the swelling peaks at about 24 hours after injection, and then goes down and looks really good by 48 hours after injection.  It will look better, still, after 1-2 weeks, when it settles in and becomes better integrated into the surrounding tissue.

It is very difficult to predict any one individuals amount of swelling with fillers. I recomend that my patients try to avoid manipulating the areas that were treated after filler injections, and to use ice packs only sparingly to help with any bruising that may have occurred. Swelling is not uncommon and when unexpected swelling does occur, it can typically last up to two weeks. I would recommend that you speak directly with your injector so they are aware of any unexpected results and can follow your progress. Best wishes,

In general, the dermal filler used for lip augmentation should not create more swelling than another.  However, your lips are very sensitive, so it's not uncommon to have swelling several days after the procedure.  I recommend applying ice intermittently over the next few days.
