Sharp pain 3 months after breast augmentation above the muscle

Question

I had BA 3 months ago, I have been getting sharp pins on my left boob. Sometimes intenselasts for 3 minutes. Also feels so uncomfortable sleeping on it unlike my right boob. Is this normal? I have also lost sensation in both so is it the nerves regenerations? When should I be worried ?

Most sharp pains in the second to sixth month are sensory neuralgia, an irritated sensory nerve.  This seems to be from the stretching of the sensory nerves, and for most, it is temporary.  Many describe it as an occasional 'lightning bolt'.  It typically will go away on its own, but can be managed in the short term with non-steroidal like ibuprofen or naprosen, or sometimes a well placed injection of steroid to calm the irritated nerve.

Yes, this is not uncommon after breast augmentation surgery. It is likly due to regeneration of sensory nerves. If very bothersome your chosen surgeon may be able to perscribe something to help soothe the pain. Please follow up with your surgeon. Regards,

Thank you for your question.  The pain that you are describing is quite normal and is commonly due to nerve regeneration.  Increased pain, swelling or redness should be reported to your plastic surgeon.  Best of luck.

Most pain/nerve issues resolves during the first few months.  Some, however, may persists for several months.  Rarely do they last longer than a year.  I would follow up with your surgeon to make sure everything else is progressing appropriately.Best Wishes,Nana Mizuguchi, MD

The pain and loss of sensation are usually caused by nerve regeneration. This is common in post op BA patients and eventually resolve over time. However, if the pain is no longer tolerable, then have a direct consultation with your surgeon for pain management.

Hi Memepink,Thanks for your question. Yes, having intermittent pains 3 months out from a BA can happen.  This does eventually go away.  The sensation will slowly return over time.Hope this helps!

This sensation is quite common after breast augmentation and usually disappears within six months after surgery. The pain you are experiencing is likely due to hypersensitive regenerating sensory nerve branches and can often be modulated by stimulation such as touch or massage of the affected or numb areas of skin on your breast. 
If the pain is accompanied by changes in the shape or contour of your breast, then the cause may be due to capsular contracture of the scar tissue around the breast or rupture of the implant itself.
If you notice the pain is associated with lateral displacement of the implant toward your side or into your armpit, the discomfort may be caused by pressure of the implant on the lateral nerves of the chest and can be best managed by wearing a supportive bra even at night.

Thank you for your question. What you are describing sounds like what we would call neurogenic pain meaning that it originates from nerves. As the nerves recover from the stretch of the underlying implant, they can become more sensitive to stimuli that would otherwise be minimal. We have found in our patients, that if they massage the area of the nerve with a textured material such as a washcloth, then these increased sensations will dissipate over the course of a month or so.
