You cannot IPL over a tattoo. Please see a laser and skin care expert for options for treatment. Best, Dr. Emer.
You never want to treat over a tattoo with and IPL or BBL system. When we are working around eyebrows ofr cosmetic tattoos, we will go to a small spot size for better control and placement and also use shielding of some sort to protect the tattoo. It is often as simple as using a tongue blade to protect the curve of a tattoo as we treat surrounding skin. Always, always, always inform your doctor if you have had any cosmetic tattooing and what and where it was placed before they treat any areas. Some pigment tattoos in the flesh, white or pink color can result in paradoxical darkening.
It is very important to never use IPL over a tattoo, and you should not do any IPL treatment within 1 finger width of any tattoo. Fading of the tattoo is a possible outcome, but there could be other adverse discolorations as well.
IPL is a great treatment for sun damage skin, sun spots, broken blood vessels and rosacea. Areas that are tattooed should be kept away and protected form the IPL treatment. Make sure to notify the physician about your tattoo.Hope this helps,Dr. Gus Diaz
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments are excellent to decrease pigment, redness and rosacea of the face . It is also used for hair removal all over the body and pigment spots everywhere on the body. it is especially useful for the decollete area. IPL can NOT be used in an area of tattoo as it may burn the skin, leave a scar and reduce pigment in the tattoo. IPL is a very safe procedure but be sure your provider is well trained and has medical supervision.
