Are scabs and bruises normal after IPL? (Photo)

Yesterday I got an IPL treatment done and noticed my forehead looks like it's bruised and scabby. As well as under my chin. It hurts at times. Is this normal? And how long will it take to heal?

I am suprised you were not educated on the expectations of IPL and what products to use post treatment.  It is normal to have little "coffe-ground" type scabs, bruising is uncommon.  Please see an expert in lasers if you are concerned.  Best, Dr. Emer.

It is not uncommon to have superficial 'coffee grind' appearing flakes or hyper-pigmentation areas after IPL. Keep theses lubricated with a good moisturizer and avoid the sun. Be sure to see a board certified Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon for these treatments.

IPL photo facials are a wonderful way to clear complexion and the face heals over 1-2 weeks. If you had brown spots or areas on your face, IPL can cause the brown spots to look like "coffee grinds" as the brown areas are coming off. Since there is tenderness, please follow up with your doctor as soon as possible for evaluation and for possible topical or oral treatment to minimize inflammation (more common) and to check for infection (rare). There is an IPL system we use called Icon that has an attached device called Skintel that helps determine settings based on skin color and type. Your doctor may have Skintel to help you for any future IPL treatments. course, it is important to follow strict sun precautions 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after treatment.

The setting was too high for you or the Ipl did not have enough gel .This will require about one week of healing. Bring this to attention of doctor so that does not happen next time.
