I am hoping a doctor can perform an FUE using body hair. Do most surgeons extract the body hair using ARTAS or NEOGRAFT, or do they rely on their own extraction instruments?

Dear cal3559,Thank you for writing in with this question. I don't see a picture associated with your question, so it's not really possible to comment on your scalp. Body hair transplants can be done, but are performed by a minority of hair transplant surgeons. The ARTAS system is not suitable for body hair transplants, but the NeoGraft or other FUE instrument may be more suitable. Hello, thank you for your question. In my professional opinion a body hair transplant should be done by a highly experienced surgeon by hand, and not by any robotic machines. Generally, this is an advanced procedure that not every hair transplant clinic can do successfully. Grafts taken from supporting areas such as the beard and chest have a lower survival rate than scalp hair, therefore it is very important that this procedure is done correctly by a surgeon who knows what they are doing. Based on my 15 years of experience specializing specifically in hair loss and hair transplant surgeries, I would recommend you speak with 2-3 surgeons regarding what the best options are for your case. Make sure that the information you are receiving makes sense, make sure the practice only performs 1 surgery per day, and make sure the doctor is performing the procedure. Hope this was helpful!

Currently, ARTAS is only approved for use with scalp hair. Body hair would need to be extracted using a manual punch device/motorized punch (neograft). Body hair will often not be as elegant of a match to your scalp hair and will also leave dot-scars wherever grafts are removed.

Neograft or ARTAS are one of many machines that harvest hairs using the Follicular Unit Excision technique.  It does not mean you will get good results because of a machine that was used to harvest hairs.

Harvesting from FUE requires technical excellence and therefore the ARTAS is often the best choice.  For patients with scarring already, patients often can benefit from trichoscopy to evaluate the amount of hairs and quality of hairs available as well as direct visualization by an experienced hair surgeon.
Body hair is very difficult and can be done only with handheld FUE devices and in some areas Neograft.

While both ARTAS and Neograft machines harvest hair using the FUE method, body hair responds differently than hair from the scalp, which can result in limited growth. It is best to schedule a consultation with your new hair transplant surgeon to have an evaluation and discuss your options.

While my center focuses on ARTAS restoration procedures for hair transplantation, we do offer manual FUE for body hair harvesting as the robot can only harvest from the back of the head.  This said, you must understand that body hair when transplanted will not realize it's not still body hair when placed on the scalp.  What this means is that they will never grow long, and they tend to be in smaller groupings than scalp hairs. This is OK if you keep your hair short, and its used for fill-in/density, but its not the best choice for hairline reconstruction.  We also use alternate methods for increasing density without relying on donor availability such as our scalp camouflage procedure.  Best of luck!
