Dr. Shaver is a board-certified dermatologist and has advanced surgical fellowship training. She has trained at prestigious institutions such as M.I.T. and Yale University. Dr. Shaver is the Medical Director at Bernstein Medical - Center for Hair Restoration in New York City and performs both FUT and robotic FUE hair transplants daily since 2018. She combines her years of education and experience with compassion and eye for aesthetics to achieve natural results for all her patients. Dr. Shaver's bedside manner and positive results are a few reasons patients refer her to friends and family.
Really liked Dr Shaver and her attentiveness to me. She paid prompt attention to my queries in a very professional and gentle way and allayed my anxieties. The procedure was a huge success and I’m ecstatic about the results. Thank you Dr Shaver
I saw Dr Shaver for a consultation and highly recommend! Dr Shaver’s CV speaks for itself and her expertise in the field was clear at every point in our discussion, diagnosis, and outlook. She took a topic that’s created a lot of anxiety and provided comfort. While I’m not a good candidate for transplantation, we walked through all the medical options and a treatment plan. I had some follow-up questions via e-mail and Dr Shaver was quick to engage and explain even more. I would HIGHLY recommend. 5 out of 5!!
Dr. Shaver is very kind and listens to you. I have been a client of Dr. Shaver for quite some time and would definitely recommend her to others. She is very knowledgeable and compassionate. Overall, I never had a bad experience.
I truly believe this is the only doctor that has my best interest at heart. I have seen three doctors. Dr. Shaver is the only one who gave me hope. No BS, no foisting products on me. She has been communicative in a time of extreme vulnerability for me. I plan on seeing her for the rest of my life. After 5 years of anxiety and not knowing what doctor is telling me the right thing (they al contradict each other), Dr. Shaver is the only one who I will trust from here on out. I could not recommend her more.
Fantastic experience. Clear plan / vision for treatment that was expertly communicated. Plan to continue to see for all future hair treatment needs. Appointment itself was timely with no delay and was able to ask questions throughout.
Dr. Shaver is the best of the best! I underwent hair transplant surgery a few years back. After consulting with several dermatologists in the area, I decided to go with Dr. Shaver and I could not be happier with my results! After more than 4 years, my head is full of thick hair and it’s given me more confidence than I could have ever imagined. Her office is incredibly clean, inviting, and equipped with the most recent state of the art equipment. She has an incredible bedside manner, which really makes the patient feel comfortable and excited to be there. I cannot recommend her enough!
TLDR: No one could come close to Dr. Shaver. I'll preface this review by saying I was the most frightened and uneasy patient any doctor would have to deal with. I also spent over a year researching various doctors, from hair transplant surgeons in NYC to England to Istanbul. Since it's, ultimately, your face on the line, cost was not the deciding factor (and I realize everyone can't be that lucky). Anyway, I came across Dr. Shaver after a recommendation for another doctor in the practice, Dr. Bernstein. I should say right now, that I'm a woman and I have pretty thick, long hair. However, I've always wanted a far more feminine forehead-widows peak, getting rid of traction Alopecia on one side of my head, and a generally lower hairline. I visited Dr. Shaver, along with a number of other doctors (virtually and in person) in the year where I decided to do this. Not only was she the most knowledgeable (not meant to be a dig against anyone, but she seemed to really get both the process but also what I wanted as a female patient) but she was by far the kindest and most responsive doctor I interacted with. I've read elsewhere that patients complained about Bernstein Medical not immediately pushing patients into surgery and instead suggesting Rogaine or PRP beforehand, but that's something I really appreciated because at the end of the day, this isn't a cheap surgery or a one/done surgery--I've had doctors try to push me after 10 minute consults into not only hair transplants but scalp advancements for upwards of $20,000. Anyway, she took an amazing amount of time, along with her incredible and very kind staff, listening to what I wanted, my concerns, and making sure my new hairline would be up to my standard. In contrast, I've been to similar surgeons who have gotten annoyed. I get this but when it's your face and your money, you want someone who can trust. Dr. Shaver redid the outline of my hairline very patiently, whenever I asked. She was also just very lovely and funny, as well as modest, along with her incredible staff. After about a year, I did decide to go through with the surgery. Both Dr. Shaver and her staff made it an incredibly pleasant procedure. For what it's worth, I had FUT (long hair, where a strip is cut from the back of your head and then those hairs are transplanted into the parts of your scalp you desire), and started surgery with a strip removed from the back before the technicians went through hair particles to place in the front of my head, where I wanted my new hairline (something we went over multiple times day of surgery until it couldn't be any more perfect) to be. All plastic surgery is scary, especially when you are awake but everyone was amazing when it came to making sure I was comfortable throughout. The staff was very preemptive with pain so I honestly felt almost nothing and really catered to me, besides just seeming like really kind people. Dr. Shaver was also there throughout the entire daylong procedure. The process took about 7ish hours, during which I mostly watched 80s movies and chilled. After the surgery, I was super scared as everyone references the ugly duckling phase (basically shock loss that comes after any surgery) but once again, Dr. Shaver and her team were incredibly responsive with any of my insane concerns. Any question or concern I had, I was checked in on, including the weekend following my surgery (on Friday) or being invited back into the office. I'll just go out and say it, this is super rare for NYC surgeons. Most of my friends have had some form of surgery/medspa and it doesn't always seem like doctors take any critique the best. I'm not naming names or going into detail but no matter what issue I thought I had, both Dr. Shaver and her team were so receptive even though every time I went to the office, there were always other patients and they always managed to fit me in and make sure I was completely okay. Now, 6 months out, my hairline looks amazing to the point where I've gotten compliments from nearly all of my friends and I'm honestly in elated shock when I look in the mirror. My hair didn't just grow in completely thick but in the exact shape that I wanted. I have a super full, feminine hairline with a widow's peak that compliments my face in the exact way Dr. Shaver mentioned it would when drawing it out, because she's a genius. In all, I was really scared getting this procedure done and, yet, the results exceeded my wildest dreams. My parents, who were also scared (maybe more so than me), are amazed and in awe. As I went to a college with a lot of students who both had PS for personal reasons or to transition (mtf), my friends who know I've had this done, are amazed, as am I, because I've seen it done wrong and while I think most things can be corrected, this is a surgery that literally takes a year to get full results and even if you go overseas, it will always be costly. I'm happy to send before, during, and current photos to anyone who'd like to see them as well, if you'd like to DM me, since I realize this is never a small decision to make. All in all, I can't imagine having worked with a different Doctor or a different staff. And I'm incredibly grateful and would be happy to answer any questions or the like.
I’ve had an amazing experience so far with Dr. Shaver. Planning on getting transplant in 4-6 months. Consult was by far and away the best I’ve had. Dr. Shaver answered all my questions and was extremely thorough and insightful. She has also been great with answering additional questions I have looking toward the transplant as they come up.
After thinking a lot I decided to move on with the hair transplant with Dr. Shaver in Nyc. I already met Dr. Shaver because in the past I had 3 sessions of PRP. September 3rd is the big day. I keep my fingers crossed
The finasteride needs 1 year to work. Often, you can recoup this hair if you give the finasteride time. Your baseline might not return to normal but I would expect some rebound. I normally do not have patients stop finasteride when trying to conceive unless conception has proven difficult for 6 months and a workup for both partners has not revealed a cause. It is also important to know that pregnant women should not touch/handle finasteride pills while pregnant.
Combination treatment will likely provide the strongest results. I prefer oral minoxidil as a solo treatment rather than topical minoxidil or PRP alone. I would recommend that oral minoxidil + PRP would be strongest.
Appears to be DUPA (diffuse alopecia). It is often best treated with combination finasteride and minoxidil. A biopsy can confirm with a board-certified dermatologist. You could also test for a thyroid condition. Scalp exam can identify inflammation or other causes and confirm with a simple biopsy.
You should be seeing growth starting at 4-6 months. I would return to your hair transplant doctor to have them evaluate. Iron deficiency can cause slow growth but for a male with a well-done hair transplant then this should not reflect as zero growth at 6 months. Sounds suspicious.
PRP is unlikely to make a noticeable difference there. I would recommend a 2nd hair transplant. Also important to consider if there in inflammation under the scalp (such as in Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia) that could have attacked some of the transplanted grafts.
